Tenor Tales

Terrible Tales of the Tenor – 30 years on the opera stage

A little bit of what this blog will be about.

Otello was one of my favorite roles. I sang the Moor more than 100 times in different productions all over Europe. One of the wierdest productions was in Darmstadt, Germany. The stage director decided that Otello was from Chad, rather than a Moor, and clothed me in a loin cloth of animal skins. I  entered carrying a super over my shoulder, sang the Esultate, and then flung the super  at the feet of Desdemona, who was sitting on the stage making paper airplanes and  throwing them into the orchestra. By the way, the Desdemona was Cheryl Studer.

John Sayers as Otello

This photo is from a normal production of Otello. I do not have any photos of the Darmstadt production. I didn’t want any. I look terrible in a loin cloth.

That was only the beginning of what was to be a very strange production.
